Program

Your exciting 2-day adventure begins early in the morning when your tour guide and our driver will pick you up from your accommodation in Cusco. The first stop of the day will be in Mollepata for a nutritious breakfast, then we will continue until we reach Challacancha for a brief rest. From here, we will start the hike to Soraypampa, where our camp is located. This first stretch is not too challenging and will help you acclimatize to the altitude. You will notice that you follow a small Inca canal for most of the way and can enjoy the beautiful Andean landscape. In Soraypampa, our camp is located at the “Lodge Soraypampa”.

After lunch, we will begin the ascent to Laguna Humantay (4,200 m / 13,780 ft). You will hike slowly due to the altitude, and upon reaching the top, you will have time to enjoy the stunning view of the lagoon, which looks like a jewel, surrounded by the snow-covered mountainous landscape. The lagoon is fed by glaciers located on the slopes of the imposing Mt. Humantay.

Our 4-hour hike is necessary to reach the lagoon, but the view is worth it, and the bravest can venture to swim. The activity, guided by our local guide, in front of the impressive Mt. Salkantay, completes this unique experience. Return to the Lodge.

Hiking Time: Approximately 6 hours (including picnic lunch on the way)

Hiking and Terrain: Hiking, open path, with some steep routes.

Camping: Overnight at the “Lodge Soraypampa”, at 3,869 m / 12,690 ft.

Today, very early in the morning, we wake up at 04:00 am with a delicious hot tea, at 04:30 am we have a good breakfast, and at 05:00 am, we start our hike to ascend to Salkantay Pass. “We like to walk early when the air is fresh, before the strong heat characteristic of the Andes affects us.” We continue climbing up the Río Blanco valley and circle around Humantay Peak, facing Salkantay Peak. The highest point of the route is Salkantay Pass at 4,638 meters (15,213 feet).

At the pass, we stop to enjoy the views of the snow-covered mountains of the Vilcabamba Range in all directions, with the glacial south face of Salkantay towering above us. We keep an eye out for Andean condors, which can often be seen in this area. After some free time, we descend to Soraypampa, where we will enjoy a delicious lunch. Later, we take the bus back to Cusco, with a 3-hour journey to arrive.

Hiking Time: Approximately 5 hours (including picnic lunch on the way), about 8 hours. Our style is to walk slowly, enjoy the scenery, and chat with our tour guide. Hiking and Terrain: Hiking, mainly on steep routes, and some open slopes.

A bit of History:

The name Salkantay or Salcantay comes from the Inca word “Sallqa”, a Quechua word meaning wild, uncivilized, fierce, or invincible, recorded as early as 1583. The name is often translated as “Wild Mountain”. To the north of Salkantay is Machu Picchu, at the end of a ridge extending from this mountain. Viewed from the main sundial of Machu Picchu, the Southern Cross is above the peak of Salkantay when it is at its highest point in the sky during the rainy season. The Incas associated this alignment with the concepts of rain and fertility and considered Salkantay one of the main deities controlling the weather and fertility in the region west of Cusco.
